CCW Permit Renewals

April 2004 was the date the first Ohio License to Carry a Concealed Handgun permits were issued, valid for four years.  Those persons who made their applications in 2004 were required to take a firearm safety course.  The actual trip to the sheriff's office required documented proof by showing the certificate of successful completion of the NRA certified firearms class in addition to taking the completed license application and a passport style photo.

To file for a renewal this year it will be a similar process.  For a renewal of one's license; apply up to 90 days before and 30 days after the issue date on your license.  DO NOT LET THE LICENSE EXPIRE.  Once again you can follow the information outlined in section 5 of the letter from the Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley - it is applicable in any county in Ohio.  Click HERE to see the letter.

1.  Ready for renewal and have your original training certificate from a NRA or an OPOTA certified instructor ?  Call the sheriff's office and make an appointment for your renewal.  You can renew up to 90 days before or 30 days after the permit expires.

1.1  If your license expires for more than 30 days - you will be required to start over again.
Interpreted: That means that you will have to take another firearms course to gain a certificate of course completion.  These course dates are available on the SCHEDULE page of the www.targething.com web site.

2.  Ready for renewal and cannot find the original training certificate ?

2.1  A Targething firearms training school student can call the shop and talk to Christine.  She will review your original record and issue you a duplicate certificate for a $15.00 paperwork and document fee.

2.2  You attended training with a different instructor ?  Call that instructor, have them look up your records and issue a duplicate certificate.

2.2.1  You cannot locate your certificate, and/or your instructor ?  Now may be the perfect time to take the refresher course.  Check out the SCHEDULE page of the www.targething.com web site and schedule yours today.  Targething is offering refresher courses for students of any instructor as long as the student completes the course prior to April 8, 2010.  After that date the student must show a dated training certificate.

3.  You used a DD214 to apply ?  Contact the sheriffs office with the date of your exit from the military. There is a set period of time that the DD214 paperwork will satisfy the education requirements for your CCW permit.  Once that time expires, a full 12-hour firearms training session will be required.  Check out the SCHEDULE page of the www.targething.com web site.

4.  You filed for your CCW based on previous police force experience and you can no longer get the departmental training officer to sign off on your education ?  As with the military, previous police force experience will satisfy the education requirements for a set period of time.  After that time expires, a full 12-hour firearms training session will be required.  Check out the SCHEDULE page of the www.targething.com web site.

DO NOT LET YOUR TRAINING EXPIRE !  Ohio law says that a CCW student must take a 12 hour firearms class for the initial application of their permit, and that they can take a refresher course prior to the expiration of their firearms competency certification.  There is no grace period at the end of the 6 years.  The renewal course is an abbreviated half day course.
